We like to know of any issues you may experience while driving your RV or motorhome. As long as standard maintenance and repairs are taken care of, there should be little to no issues at all. To increase awareness, we decided to add a list of standard maintenance and upkeep tips for your RV/trailer here! If you have any questions, simply stop by the shop or give us a call here at Byrne's Garage LLC in New Albany, IN!
Standard Maintenance Should Include:
Brakes: Your RV or trailer brakes should be inspected and serviced annually or more often if you make substantial use of the trailer.
Ramp door: You should lubricate ramp door hinges with Lithium grease. Also, periodically lubricate the ramp door extension.
Huck bolts: Check the huck bolts periodically. If you detect a loose huck bolt fastener, do not tow the trailer. Call your dealer for instructions. Huck bolts are not end-user serviceable.
Pre-Departure Maintenance Going out RVing is a vacation and an adventure rolled into one so before going out, make an appointment to have your RV serviced. This usually includes tire rotation, an oil change if necessary and an overall inspection of the vehicle for potential problems.
Lights, Fluids & Wipers: Your lights and wipers are not the first thing you think of before taking that RV trip, have our team make sure the engine is running smoothly by checking oil, brake fluid and transmission fluid to make sure they are filled. Once all fluid levels are fine, we check your lights and windshield wipers.
Tire Safety All tires should be the same type, size, and construction—do not mix bias-belted and radial tires. In selecting tires, buy the size, type. Our team will check to ensure you have the proper tire pressure and replace worn tires. Also, replace your tires at the same time so you are aware when they need to be replaced again.
Tires Periodic inspection and maintenance of your RV and trailer tires and wheels are essential to towing safety, including spare tires. Proper tire pressure affects vehicle handling and the safety of your tires. You can find the correct tire pressure for your RV or motorhome in the owner’s manual or on the tire information placard.
• Under-inflation reduces the load-carrying capacity of your RV, motorhome or trailer, may cause sway and control problems and may result in overheating, causing blowouts or other tire failures.
• Over-inflation causes premature tire wear and affects the handling characteristics of the tow vehicle or trailer.
Wiring Make sure connector-plug prongs and receptacles, light bulb sockets, wire splices, and ground connections are clean and shielded from moisture. Lightly coat all electrical terminal connections with non-conducting (dielectric), light waterproof grease. Clean the prongs with very fine sandpaper, being careful not to damage the contact area. Clean the surface deposits in the connector holes. (Make sure the lights are off to prevent blowing a fuse) Try to clean off only the deposits and lubricate lightly with dielectric, light waterproof grease.
Your pre-trip planning should include the following:
Inspect the emergency equipment on your RV to make sure you have a fully-stocked first aid kit, a functioning fire extinguisher and an emergency kit that should at least include a tire pump, spare fuses, flashlight, multipurpose tool, pocket knife, road flares, and some canvas work gloves. Be sure to inspect your spare tire and vehicle jack as well.
Check your trailer hitch: the nuts, bolts, and other fasteners to ensure that the hitch remains secured to your RV or motorhome and the coupler remains secured to the trailer. The connection point may require periodic lubrication to permit free movement of the coupler to the hitch ball.
Some RV Ownership Tips
Our job at Byrne's Garage LLC in New Albany is to help you travel safely and these RV tips we feel are a good way to help you with your RV ownership.
Driving Your RV - Motorhome Use an empty parking lot and practice your turns. Remember that your RV will need a wider turn radius than a car, so when making a turn pull out further into the intersection before beginning your turn. RVs also need more room to slow down, so when driving on the highways always follow the speed limit and keep a good distance between yourself and the vehicles in front of you. When coming to an off-ramp, slow down well before reaching it to avoid having to decelerate suddenly.
Going slowly will also help when you run into bad weather. High winds will affect your motorhome or RV more than it will a car. Keep a strong grip on your steering wheel and you should be okay. For rain or snow, you should decrease your speed. A vehicle like a motorhome is less prone to skidding than a car because of its lower center of gravity, but at the same time, it is much harder to control if it goes into a skid. The same holds true of a 5th wheel camper or horse trailer with living quarters so any large camper or RV needs special consideration.
Low bridges are another hazard of which you should be aware. Most bridges have their heights displayed to the drivers passing underneath them, so know the height of your motorhome or RV camper before you get on the road.
Getting To Know Your LP System The LP system on your motorhome is one of the most important systems on-board. While race season is primarily in the warm months and the furnace may not get much use, the LP system may also fuel the refrigerator, the range, the oven, and the water heater. In fact, some of these appliances operate on both electricity and LP gas, allowing you to switch back and forth. Be sure you have an LP monitor-warning system in your camper to warn you if you have a gas leak.
LP stands for liquefied petroleum gas and is also known as propane. The gas is sold in liquid form and kept in a storage tank beneath the coach is a special compartment. A panel, usually beneath the slide out, gives you full access to the tank. You coach may be equipped with a 60-lb./14-gallon tank. One pound of propane produces 36 cubic feet of gas. You can expect to use a couple of gallons of LP a week in warm weather and more if it’s cold and the furnace is operating. Keep track of the gauge to know when you are running low.
Winterizing Your Motorhome - RV When wintertime comes around and camping season is over, what do you do with the RV? Just park it, right? Not so fast. You have some chores to do if you want to use your RV again in the spring. Exposing your camper to freezing weather without preparation can damage a number of systems, such as water lines, tanks, and water heaters. And even if you live where cold temperatures are rare, your motorhome still needs attention. We recommend you follow these procedures for maintaining your RV or that you bring it to Byrne's Garage LLC in New Albany for winterizing. If you choose to do it yourself, these are some helpful tips.
• Begin by removing all food and beverages. This includes everything in the cabinets and the refrigerator — even that small jar of mustard in the back corner of the refrigerator. Anything you leave is subject to freezing or spoiling. Cleaning up an exploded can of Pepsi first thing in spring is not fun.
• Drain thoroughly all water tanks, holding tanks, lines and pumps to prevent damage to the RV’s water system. Don’t drain the tanks onto your front lawn. It’s messy and unhealthy. Most campgrounds have dump stations you can use for a small fee. Also, remember to drain the water heater and the toilet.
• Use a non-toxic RV anti-freeze to keep any remaining water from freezing in the system. You can find the anti-freeze at your RV supply store. Also, put some RV anti-freeze in each drain.
• Tape up all vents and openings, including vents for the furnace, and range hood. This will keep mice and other little critters from gaining access to the unit.
• Cover the regulator on the propane cylinder and extinguish all pilot lights.
• You should keep your coach road-ready by running the engine for about 30 minutes each month and if possible drive your RV monthly at least 10 miles.
• Prepare your generator for winter storage by performing regular maintenance, check the anti-freeze and run it for 30 minutes to an hour monthly.
These are some basic tips to help ensure a safe experience with your RV - Motorhome - Camper. If you have any maintenance or repairs concerns our RV Service Advisors at Byrne's Garage LLC in New Albany, IN are here to help you as well simply give us a call or schedule a routine service visit to ensure your RV - Motorcoach is ready to hit the road when you are!

JASPER® offers 4 levels of engine performance models for our New Albany drivers to choose from with the complete information listed below for your convenience.
JASPER® PERFORMANCE STOCK ENGINES
"Stock" is the general engine offered in a production vehicle and it receives the JASPER® Engines standard remanufacturing process which includes torque plate honing, three-angle valve seat machining precision crankshaft machining, oil chamfering, and polishing plus computer-assisted live-run testing.
JASPER® PERFORMANCE CLASS I ENGINES
The "Class I" engine receives a mild camshaft upgrade providing about 10% more horsepower and torque over the standard stock engine. The Class I version of the JASPER PERFORMANCE Engine is for the individual who wants more performance than stock but nothing too radical in camshaft or engine design. The Class I engine does not use a radical camshaft. The camshaft included with the engine is a torque-economy type that provides better everyday performance than stock without sacrificing smooth idle and driveability. This type of cam is also compatible with today’s computer-controlled engines.
JASPER® PERFORMANCE STOCK PERFORMANCE ENGINES
The JASPER® "Stock Performance Engine" has a more aggressive camshaft profile compared to the Class I engine and also receives performance cylinder heads as an upgraded bolt-on part. With performance starting at 300 horsepower, and that fair idle lope street rod & muscle car guys love to hear, the stock performance engine is regarded as the most economical horsepower build. This engine is ideal for street rods, Corvettes, Camaros, and other performance vehicles. Priced very reasonably, this engine includes the block, Vortec-style heads, oil pump, and timing cover.
JASPER® PERFORMANCE CLASS II ENGINES
Our serious performance-minded drivers wanting power for their street rods, muscle cars, racing or a project vehicle always choose the JASPER® Class II Performance Engine which receives additional machining to castings such as align boring, block deck surface machining and balancing of the rotating assembly. Special components like performance valves, high-performance fasteners, a double roller timing set, and high tension valve springs are selected and matched for most applications to obtain maximum performance.

3 YEAR | 100,000 MILES NATIONWIDE PARTS & LABOR WARRANTY
Whether you’re looking for an upgrade, or your old tired engine finally bit the dust, Byrne's Garage LLC in New Albany, IN has the quality mechanics you need and the right choice for you in JASPER® Engines which is the nation's leading provider of remanufactured engines. Remanufactured Gas Engines from Jasper Engines & Transmissions offer a proven, economical, and reliable means of extending the life of your present vehicle or equipment.
JASPER remanufactured gas engines are built to meet or exceed original equipment manufacturer measured tolerances, and most applications are covered by a 3 year | 100,000 miles nationwide, transferable parts and labor warranty. These are completely remanufactured engines with all new wear parts, exacting tolerances, and run-tested reliability.
As a local business, it is our mission to treat each and every customer with the courtesy and respect we show each other. We work hard to make sure that EVERY service we perform is completed with attention to detail and the quality we'd want for ourselves which is why we offer high-quality solutions we know will stand the test of time like JASPER remanufactured engines which are backed by a Nationwide Parts & Labor 3 Year | 100,000 Mile Warranty.
USED ENGINE REPLACEMENT FACTS
We get that question from our New Albany drivers and the answer is quite simple, with a used engine you are gaining just that; a used engine has not been completely inspected and cleaned with intensive testing. NO WARRANTY. The engine history is not known and it is a failure waiting to happen. A JASPER remanufactured engine is completely cleaned, disassembled, inspected, all components replaced, tested, and meets or often EXCEEDS factory OEM standards and backed by a Nationwide warranty. Used components are pulled directly from a vehicle – typically a junkyard vehicle – and generally not even so much as a surface is cleaned. There are no provisions for disassembly, internal cleaning, or inspection with a used component. Used or junkyard engines may have high mileage and there is NO maintenance history so you have no idea what could have happened to that vehicle's part prior to hitting the junkyard. Many used or junkyard engines were involved in an accident, immersed in water, or fallen off a cliff. When we replace your engine with a USED Engine, our technicians here at Byrne's Garage LLC in New Albany simply replace the engine from a used vehicle that is the same make & model. It may be more affordable but we do not recommend due to your vehicle being back on the road without a warranty.
REBUILT ENGINE FACTS
To rebuild an engine, we recondition, cleaning, inspect and replace severely worn or broken parts in the engine. Serviceable parts are reused within the manufacturer's acceptable wear limits. The quality of rebuilt engine components varies widely and many come with only a limited warranty not a full parts and labor 3 Year / 100,000 Mile Nationwide Warranty. Here our technicians take the unit and break it down replacing the parts that are needed and ONLY those parts so that you are back on the road. This is a good fix if it is a clear and simple issue and very MINOR damage but fits only a very small margin of our New Albany drivers. The warranty, if any is very limited.
REMANUFACTURED JASPER® ENGINE FACTS
Remanufactured engines are as close to new as possible without having a big price tag. Most wearable parts are automatically replaced. All core material is closely inspected and checked against original equipment specifications for correct dimensional tolerances. Replacement parts are new or requalified. If new, parts are made in the same production processes as original equipment. A JASPER® remanufactured engine is taken down to the basics with most wearable parts replaced. All core material is closely inspected and checked against original equipment specifications for correct dimensional tolerances. Replacement parts are new or requalified. If new, parts are made in the same production processes as original equipment. Testing is performed to manufacturer specifications and original production standards. With JASPER® remanufactured engines you get tolerances that meet or exceed those of the OEM (original equipment manufacturer). Live-run testing is performed to ensure manufacturer specifications and original production standards are met or exceeded. It simply is rebuilt and put back in new condition which is why they back it with such an in-depth nationwide warranty, that in many cases, is better than a new component warranty. Completely remanufactured, for a lot less than imagined.
You drive away from our shop with confidence with a JASPER® remanufactured engine and a warranty and our New Albany drivers have proven that time and time again to be a great choice.

JASPER® ENGINE PROCESS
THOROUGH CLEANING
Every JASPER® reman engine is completely disassembled. Blocks, heads, connecting rods, crankshafts, and camshafts are thoroughly cleaned through a variety of processes to remove contaminants that can result in premature wear to internal engine components and early engine failure.
CRANKSHAFTS
Crankshafts are precision machined to exact tolerances with no odd size bearings or journals. Thrust surfaces (domestic engines) are micro-polished to provide precise surface finishes for smooth engine operation and reduced thrust bearing wear. Every journal is inspected and measured with critical accuracy. After machining, oil holes are chamfered to improve lubrication and every journal polished to a smooth finish for long bearing life. Crankshafts are thoroughly cleaned with special emphasis on flushing and brushing out oil passages to remove any contaminants.
CAMSHAFTS
Camshafts are inspected for wear, dimensional accuracy and gauged for straightness. Camshaft lobes are carefully machined to correct specifications. Each shaft is Parco-Lubricated to improve lubricant adhesion, especially during break-in. Any camshaft not meeting the high JASPER® specification requirement is replaced.
CYLINDERS
Cylinders are bored and honed to exact specifications. Most gas engines are torque plate honed - a process we learned from our involvement in NASCAR - that eliminates cylinder distortion after the head is bolted and torqued to the block. This process eliminates a major cause of engine blow-by. Blocks are carefully inspected for cracks and flaws through procedures such as magnetic particle inspection. Cylinder finish and size are closely monitored to industry surface finish standards as well as for accuracy and consistency. This assures smooth piston travel and engine performance. JASPER® guarantees no odd size cylinders. The block to head mating surface is closely inspected and resurfaced as required to provide the correct surface finish for today's gasket materials.
CONNECTING RODS
Connecting rods are machined and gauged to within a half a thousandth for improved operation, especially in today's engines. Rods are carefully machined to avoid taper and to the standard diameter of original equipment. All rods are checked for bend and twist to assure smooth operation.
HEADS
Heads are carefully inspected for cracks and flaws through procedures such as magnetic particle inspection. Every head is resurfaced to exact dimensional tolerances and the surface finish is carefully monitored for proper sealing with the block. Valve seats and guides are machined to exact specifications or replaced to assure correct valve alignment and seating and optimum engine performance.
ASSEMBLY
Every gas engine is precisely assembled by trained JASPER builders. Attention to such details as a final wash of new and machined parts and pre-lubricated camshafts, pistons, and crankshaft journals assures a clean, smooth-running engine that performs to your expectations.
TESTING
JASPER® live tests every popular Complete domestic and import reman engine with recorded inspections of temperatures, oil pressure, vacuum, and compression. Engines are black-light inspected to assure there are no oil leaks. JASPER's testing is one of the many ways we assure your satisfaction.
QUALITY CONTROL
Consistent quality is maintained through a continuous training program of technicians, many of whom are ASE certified, backed with statistical process control. Technicians are also JASPER® Certified to specific engines and job functions. Quality audits of all areas of the engine are scrutinized for cleanliness, surface finish quality, lubrication, clearance and wear patterns.

THOROUGH CLEANING
Every JASPER® reman transmission is thoroughly disassembled then cleaned to remove contaminants that result in premature wear to gears, bearings, shafts and other precision components like the valve body. Transmission cleaning includes individual component hand washing. Parts are carefully inspected and bushing surfaces are polished to a micro finish for extended bushing life.
EXACT TOLERANCES
As transmission technology advances, the need to maintain exacting tolerances becomes increasingly important which they are very thorough and precise. The machining processes are critical to assure proper operating pressures and provide for a long service life from your JASPER® Remanufactured Transmission such as:
- Case and valve body resurfacing along with profilometer inspection of the shaft finish that enables JASPER® to maintain exact standards and precise tolerances in all phases of transmission remanufacturing.
- The front pump and gears are carefully gauged and, if exact tolerances are not met, machined to assure they meet their high standards and precise operation.
- Updates to specific transmissions such as the 5R110 for which JASPER® installs a machine-in-place bushing in the pump housing to provide correct alignment between the pump housing and converter hub.
TORQUE CONVERTERS
Torque converters are cut open to allow for a thorough cleaning, accurate inspection and the replacement of washers, spacers, springs, rollers, and a new or re-lined lock-up clutch piston as applicable. Turbine fins are inspected and retightened and welded on specific applications. Hubs are carefully inspected and replaced. Converters are pressure tested then dynamically balanced to eliminate vibration that could cause noise, leaks or transmission damage.
VALVE BODIES
Valve bodies are disassembled, cleaned and remanufactured by skilled technicians. All components of the valve body are inspected for wear and the valve body is resurfaced for correct mating and sealing with the transmission case.
VALVE BODY TESTING
Valve bodies are tested on an Answermatic test unit which simulates actual vehicle operation. Vehicle speed and driver demand are varied hydraulically. The Answermatic quickly locates cracks and imperfections and verifies accurate shift points.
TRANSMISSION PRE-INSPECTION
Transmission performance is pre-inspected at the assembly station to assure correct operation before additional assembly and testing is performed. Pressurized fluid and special fixtures are used to test circuit leakage.
NEW PARTS
JASPER® remanufactured transmissions receive a standard set of new and qualified parts. Their standard parts replacement assures smooth, consistent performance and long unit life. JASPER® remanufactured transmissions are assembled by skilled technicians many of whom are ASE Certified and who specialize in particular models or families.
DYNAMOMETER TESTING
Every JASPER® domestic automatic reman transmission is dynamometer tested with recorded inspections to shift patterns and shift pressures. A stall test, fluid leak test, lockup test (as applicable) and park test are performed. Tests are made at varying RPM's and at full and closed throttle positions. Standard transmissions are tested at the work station for proper gear engagement as well as for gear and bearing noise and proper engagement of the shift rails into the detents.
QUALITY CONTROL
Consistent quality is maintained through a continuous training program of ASE technicians backed with statistical process control. Technicians are also JASPER® Certified to specific transmissions and job functions. Weekly disassembly of a production transmission is also performed. All areas of the transmission are scrutinized for cleanliness, surface finishes quality, lubrication, clearance and wears patterns.

Today’s vehicles differ significantly from their decades-old brethren that required a tune-up every 10,000 or 20,000 miles. With newer vehicles, it’s increasingly common for manufacturer-recommended service intervals to stretch to 100,000 miles before certain maintenance items, such as replacing the spark plugs, should be completed.
That doesn’t mean, however, that routine maintenance or potential warning signs can or should be ignored. After all, replacing a vehicle is expensive. A more economical alternative is to take care of the one you’re already driving. Start by paying attention to what your vehicle might be trying to tell you and by recognizing these 9 signs that it’s time for a tune-up or maintenance.
Here are 9 signs that you need a tune-up.
1. Warning lights Those little indicators on your dashboard that light up when starting the car and that sometimes stay illuminated are there for a reason – to indicate a problem or potential problem with a vehicle system or component. Pay attention to these indicator lights, and when they illuminate, get them diagnosed at your earliest opportunity. They could be indicating something as simple as a burned-out taillight or more serious problem, such as a transmission failure. Diagnosing and fixing a minor problem can help you avoid a much bigger and costlier problem down the road.
2. Stalling If your vehicle suddenly begins stalling at intersections, when you try to accelerate, or at other times, not only is this a warning sign of trouble lurking but it also can put you in a dangerous situation. Engines are designed to deliver reliable performance, particularly when you need it most, such as merging onto a highway. The cause could be fouled spark plugs or a clogged fuel filter, or something else entirely. If you find your vehicle is stalling unexpectedly, then give us a call and describe the situation then bring it in as soon as possible.
3. Hard starts You’re allowed to be a little sluggish first thing in the morning. Your vehicle isn’t. If it won’t start when you need it to, if it takes several turns of the key before it does start, or if it starts but won’t stay running, you’ve got a problem. It could be a weak battery or a defective starter or a host of other problems. Keep an eye on it and see if there is a pattern of when it happens then give us a call OR if you feel concerned at any time, simply call us here at the shop!
4. Poor fuel mileage If you feel like you are filling the gas tank more frequently even though you’re driving the same distance and you’re confident no one’s taking your car for unauthorized late-night spins, your vehicle might be experiencing a reduction in fuel mileage. You’re getting fewer miles out of a gallon of gas, and you need to find out why. A sudden decrease in fuel mileage indicates the vehicle isn’t operating as efficiently as it should. Maybe it’s improper tire pressure or a sticking brake pad or just time for a tune-up. Track your baseline fuel mileage so you know what it should be before a problem occurs. Lower fuel mileage is always a sign of something different happening inside your engine and should work like a "check engine light" on your dash!
5. Soft or noisy brakes Your vehicle’s brakes are supposed to bring you to a stop quietly, without you having to put your foot through the floor pressing on the brake pedal. If your brakes squeak unmercifully or you feel a rhythmic vibration when the brakes are applied, there’s a good chance something’s wrong. The same goes for a brake pedal that feels “soft” or “spongy” when you press down on it, requires a lot of leg power, and doesn’t stop until you’ve almost reached the floor. Brake pads, rotors and brake fluid are items that wear down and need to be replaced and maintained periodically. Never wait until you have NO brakes, any changes in your brakes are important, and we'd love to hear about it before an accident!
6. Other unexplained noises If your brakes are quiet but other unwelcome noises have suddenly appeared on the scene, trouble might not be far behind. Common culprits include squealing when turning the steering wheel at low speeds – a possible indication of a low power steering fluid level; squealing from under the hood when the vehicle is started – possibly a loose or worn belt; noise from one or more wheels or perhaps an unbalanced tire or a failing CV joint. Whatever the reason, noise isn’t good, particularly if it’s a sound that wasn’t there previously. You know your vehicle better than anyone else as you drive it continuously so if you are concerned at any time, simply give us a call or bring it by the shop.
7. Rough shifts Automatic transmissions take the work, and guesswork, out of shifting. They’re smooth, reliable and efficient – until they’re not. If your vehicle hesitates when shifting from reverse to drive or vice versa if gear changes are rough or abrupt if the vehicle is upshifting or downshifting sporadically and when you least expect it, or if it has trouble shifting into a higher gear as engine RPMs climb, your transmission needs attention. The gears that make your vehicle go depend on transmission fluid, filters, and screens all of which require periodic maintenance for protection and long life. Your transmission should shift smoothly and if it is not doing so let us know before it becomes a larger issue.
8. Sluggish acceleration or a loss of power This can be a dangerous problem. Sometimes you have a need for speed, and power, such as when merging onto a highway, passing another vehicle on a two-lane road, or towing a trailer uphill. When the power you’ve come to expect and rely on suddenly isn’t there, it can cause a sticky situation. While regular maintenance can help prevent these problems from occurring, if you do notice a reduction in power, get it checked out to determine the cause.
9. Vibration The sudden appearance of a vibration that isn’t caused by rough road conditions is a red flag. You might only feel it in the steering wheel at a certain speed or it may seem to go throughout the whole vehicle. It could indicate a variety of problems, including worn or unbalanced tires, a tire going flat, or a failing universal joint, among other problems. Document where it happened and at what speed as well as how it felt (was it in your hands on the wheel or did you feel it under your seat or feet) You get the idea.
A good starting point – Your vehicle owner’s manual Your owner’s manual is the solution to preventing many common vehicle problems in the first place. In addition to your trusted technician, this handy little book is the authority on when your vehicle and all its complex systems require maintenance. These service intervals are clearly spelled out in the maintenance section and detail the recommended mileage and time intervals at which maintenance should occur. Refer to the manual regularly, follow its recommendations, listen to what your vehicle is trying to tell you, and act on those warning signs if you want to experience fewer vehicle-related problems. The owner's manual is there for your convenience and if you can't find it the 2nd option we tell our New Albany drivers is that it may be "worth a Google" if they can't reach us at the shop.
